Bedside placement of a retrievable inferior vena cava filter in a morbidly obese patient guided by modified IVUS approach.

Abstract

Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism are major causes of morbidity and mortality in trauma patients. Anticoagulation therapy is often contraindicated in these patient populations. The retrievable inferior vena cava (IVC) filter provides a good option for preventing pulmonary embolism in the immediate injury and postoperative periods. Bedside IVC filter placement by guidance of intravascular ultrasound eliminates the risk of transportation; it is safe, efficient, and cost effective. We hereby present a case of bedside IVC filter placement in a morbidly obese patient with modified intravascular ultrasound approach.
