Pancytopenia in systemic lupus erythematosus related to azathioprine.

J C Nossent1, A J Swaak.

Abstract

A patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) developed pancytopenia when azathioprine (first 2.0 mg kg-1 day-1, then 2.5 mg kg-1 day-1) was added to prednisone for active SLE. This unusual toxic effect of azathioprine occurred during the reduction of corticosteroid dosage. After discontinuation of azathioprine, clinical and haematological recovery occurred.
