Cardiac arrests. Hospitals anxious they could face hefty false claims penalties in implanted cardiac defibrillator cases.

Joe Carlson.

Abstract

Hospitals are nervously waiting to hear if False Claims Act penalties will be imposed on implanted defibrillator cases that don't fit Medicare guidelines. The Cleveland Clinic's heart program has had 264 of its cases questioned. "At the time, I think we made the right decision, and I don't feel at all uncomfortable defending that," says Bruce Lindsay, left, of the system. "I think we did the right thing".
