The adult respiratory distress syndrome. Definition and prognosis.

M A Matthay1.

Abstract

This article provides an expanded definition of acute lung injury and the adult respiratory distress syndrome and describes the value of using this definition for establishing prognosis by discussing the basis for the acute lung injury scoring system, the various clinical disorders that may be associated with acute lung injury and how they affect outcome, and the influence of nonpulmonary organ failure on the outcome of patients with acute lung injury.
