Publishing high quality research in pharmaceutical sciences in the year beginning 2009, Journal of Young Pharmacists (JYP) is one is one of the most preferred publications in the field of pharmacy within India. (JYP) has considerably risen to one of the quality journals in a short span of time along with a high indexing status. JYP is now indexed in Caspur, Chemical Abstracts, DOAJ, EBSCO Publishing's Electronic Databases, Expanded Academic ASAP, GenamicsJournalSeek, Global Health, Google Scholar, Health and Wellness Research Center, Health Reference Center Academic, Hinari, Index Copernicus, Indian Science Abstracts, OpenJGate, PrimoCentral, ProQuest, PubMed, Pubmed Central, Scimago Journal Ranking, SCOLOAR, SCOPUS, SIIC databases, Summon by Serial Solutions, and Ulrich's International Periodical Directory. We are also working to get ourself listed with the science citation index soon. JYP is one of the first journals started by InPharm Association, and currently InPharm Association publishes many other journals such as Systematic Reviews in Pharmacy (www.sysrevpharm.org), Pharmaceutical Methods (www.phmethods.org), Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation (www.jpionline.org), and Journal of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapeutics (www.jpharmacol.com).[1-7]

JYP PUBLISHING POLICY

Journal of Young Pharmacists’ open access policy changes the way in which articles are published. First, articles become freely accessible. Second, the full text is universally accessible online, and so an author's work can be read by anyone at no cost. Third, a separate copy of the full text of each open access article is archived in an online repository from the journal. JYP articles are archived in PubMed Central, the US National Library of Medicine's full-text repository of life science literature, DOAJ, other open repositories, etc. JYP articles are available in various publishing formats to suit individual needs. Recently, Medknow has been acquired by Wolters Kluwer, a leading global information provider. It means a new opportunity for global exposure and impact for our journal. Wolters Kluwer is known throughout the world as the authoritative source of current, highly regarded information and research tools. Wolters Kluwer and its brands Ovid and Lippincott Williams and Wilkins are committed to sourcing the locally-written content and using Open Access models to support its discoverability worldwide.

INCREASING COST

Due to increasing publishing cost and other financial constraints in the year 2011, articles clearing in the peer review process or upon acceptance and articles accepted for the year 2012 issues, the authors are required to pay a minimum of Rs. 2500/- (Indian authors) and USD 150/- (Foreign authors) towards pre-press charges to Medknow Publications and Media Pvt. Ltd, Mumbai (this cost is for a standard length article, i.e., 1–6 pages and 2 figures, articles over this limit will incur higher charges).

SOURCES OF FUNDING

Most of the authors have no idea how JYP is financed and tend to assume that there is plenty of money with us. Hence, I would like to highlight in this editorial about the policy, which includes a clear explanation of how JYP is being financed and why the APCs are vital for the journal's survival, APC is a need of hour. Currently, Journal Young Pharm. absorbs the cost of publishing only via print subscriptions, although there were not a reasonable number of subscribers to cover the publishing cost without charging authors. For the past 3 years, we have been requesting and promoting the print subscriptions in pharmacy colleges worldwide. However, it does not work every time, as most of our content is being published as Open Access. Most of libraries prefer to access it online.

WHY DO WE CHARGE?

As JYP is an Open Access journal, the content is fully free to read. The journal is noncommercial and currently, it is self-financing and not supported by any major organization. Cost is being absorbed only with subscriptions. Hence, a nominal cost will be levied to cover the huge publishing cost.

Charges include

Journal hosting systems [Medknow Publications and Media Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai] Manuscript submission systems [Journalonweb.com] In-house copyediting and linguistic support Pagination and typesetting Inclusion in Crossref, giving a permanent DOI, and enabling easy citation in other journals. Archiving in Pubmed, an internationally recognized, open access repository. APCs will allow continued open access to all of JYP articles. The authors are asked to pay only if their article is accepted for publication. Waiver requests will be considered on some instances, by the Editor-in-Chief. The authors can become a ‘member’ of Inpharm Association, whereby the members can avail 50% discount on APCs. No charge is being made for articles that are rejected after the peer review. Many funding agencies have also realized the importance of open access publishing and allot specific amounts exclusively for such APCs. We have included and made clear the information about APCs is in the Instructions to Authors and in the submission site [http://www.journalonweb.com/jyp]. We are taking care to inform the authors well in advance about the charges upon acceptance either before submission or after submission of an article. An automated acknowledgement letter will also have complete details about the APCs. When a receipt of a new manuscript is confirmed by the journal, the authors will be reminded about the APCs. The authors will be informed clearly at this time that if they do not provide assurance that they will pay the APCs, once the manuscript is accepted, then the manuscript cannot be reviewed and the editorial office will wait until they receive this assurance from the author before they begin the review process. Else, the authors can withdraw the manuscript at that time. This way, the journal will not waste its time and resources on the review and editing process.

MISINTERPRETATION AND LIMITATIONS

Article processing charges for a journal are always assumed that anything could be published when it is a paid journal. The authors should not have any misinterpretation about the quality of articles being published. None of the editors and reviewers receives any sort of financial benefits although they work extensively in spare time for the growth of journal. I ensure there would be a worthy and quality publication with J Young Pharm. Wish you a happy reading of the current issue.
