Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Preventable hospitalization for congestive heart failure (CHF) is believed to capture the failure of the outpatient health care system to properly manage and treat CHF. In anticipation of changes in the national health care system, we report baseline rates of these hospitalizations and describe trends by race over 15 years.Entities:

Figure.Age- and sex-standardized preventable hospitalization rates for congestive heart failure in the United States across 7 periods. Error bars represent 95% confidence intervals. There was a negative linear trend for whites (β = −14/100,000; P = .01) and a borderline decrease for blacks (β = −19/100,000; P = .06). The slopes for blacks and whites were not significantly different from each other. Source: National Hospital Discharge Survey, 1995-2009.
