Abstract
Alberta's abolition of its health regions and the creation of Alberta Health Services in 2008 has integrated previously disparate providers of healthcare services. The long-term benefits of this "second-wave" approach to health systems structuring include lower administrative costs, greater equity of access, improved intraprovincial learning and economies of scale. Some benefits have begun to be realized but, as with any merger, performance should be judged over a multi-year time frame.Year: 2011 PMID: 22294988 PMCID: PMC3082384 DOI: 10.12927/hcpol.2013.22176
