Abstract
AIM: The aim of this study was to explore older people's experience of the decision to relocate to long-term care and their early experiences post-relocation. METHOD: Interviews were held with eight older people who had recently relocated to long-term care settings in southern Ireland. Data were analysed using Collaizzi's (1978) phenomenological method. FINDINGS: There was evidence of poor communication with, and minimal participation of, older people in the decision to relocate. Their experiences differed according to respective contexts and events that led up to the move. CONCLUSION: Nurses have an important part to play in reducing the negative consequences associated with individuals transferring to long-term care.
