Gambling problems and features of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder among children and adolescents.

Jeffrey L Derevensky1, Lana M Pratt, Karen K Hardoon, Rina Gupta.

Abstract

Adolescence has been typically described as a developmental stage during which risky behaviors are common. Although considerable attention has been paid to high-profile risky behaviors, including alcohol and drug abuse, eating disorders, and smoking, little attention has focused on adolescent problem gambling. Given the DSM criteria of problem gambling being designated as an impulse control disorder, the relationship between adolescent problem gambling and impulsivity was assessed by using 2336 adolescents aged 12 to 19 years. Adolescents experiencing problem gambling- related behaviors were found to have a greater number of self-reported Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder symptoms. The results are discussed with respect to the relationship between adolescent impulsivity and gambling problems.
