Abstract
OBJECTIVE: While respiratory symptoms in the first year of life are relatively well described for term infants, data for preterm infants are scarce. We aimed to describe the burden of respiratory disease in a group of preterm infants with and without bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and to assess the association of respiratory symptoms with perinatal, genetic and environmental risk factors.Entities:

a BPD was defined as in the consensus guidelines (2)
b Chorioamnionitis was verified by histological findings of the placenta
c PDA = haemodynamic relevant patent ductus arteriosus
d PIP = maximum peak inspiratory pressure
e Cord blood pH = arterial chord blood pH: 1 defined as < 7.15 and 0 defined as > 7.15
f comparable results were obtained for APGAR-scores at 1 and 5 minutes
g Contact to other children = having siblings or going to a nursery care institution regularly
