Sjögren's syndrome after infection by Epstein-Barr virus.

J S Gaston1, M Rowe, P Bacon.

Abstract

We describe a case in which infection with Epstein-Barr virus in a middle aged woman was followed by the development of Sjögren's syndrome with systemic features and high titers of antinuclear antibodies. Humoral and cell mediated immune responses to the virus appeared normal. It is suggested that in this case, Sjögren's syndrome resulted from a failure to control these initially appropriate responses.
