Emotional intelligence, attachment and bonding and communication.

This study explores the use of emotional intelligence (El) as an explanatory factor in the relationship between attachment and mother-infant bonding and communication. With the long-term aim of synthesising these constructs into a useful tool to identify risk for mother-infant bonding and communication problems, the study utilised previously validated questionnaires. The inter-relationships between El and adult attachment anxiety/avoidance were investigated alongside their associations with mothers' self-assessments of bonding problems and with observer-based assessments of maternal communicative behaviour. The study suggests that the El capacity for managing and controlling emotions in challenging situations mediates the link between anxious attachment style and bonding problems. Women with lower El also showed more disrupted behaviours during play with their infants. The results support further development of the use of the constructs of El and attachment in identifying risk for bonding and communication difficulties.
