[Hypertension in women].

Selen Yurdakul1, Saide Aytekin.

Abstract

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cerebrovascular and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Risk for cardiovascular events differ between men and women. Hypertension in women and its related outcomes are a major public health problem. Trials of drug therapy for hypertension have shown a benefit in preventing cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, however it is still not clear whether treatment benefit is similar for both sexes. Up to date, several studies have examined the gender differences in hypertension but none of them has given sufficient information to guide appropriate treatment of hypertensive women. This review examines epidemiological studies and clinical trials to assess the aspects of hypertension in women and the antihypertensive treatment recommendations for women.
