Abstract

PURPOSE: To report a first case of retinitis pigmentosa accompanied with retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP). CASE: A 60-year-old woman was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa. Fundus examination revealed intraretinal hemorrhage and exdates with retinal edema in the subfovea region OD. Indocyanine green angiogram revealed the presence of retino-choroidal anastomosis. These findings were compatible with the lesions observed in the form of RAP in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is resistant to photodynamic therapy with verteporfin and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy.
CONCLUSION: A first case of retinitis pigmentosa accompanied with RAP presented. Although few clinical cases of retinitis pigmentosa accompanied with choroidal neovascularization have been reported, this is the first report of RAP combined with retinitis pigmentosa. Further research is required to examine the mechanism associating these two conditions.
