Depressive illness in old age.

K P Allen.

Abstract

Depression in the elderly is increasingly common, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Elderly patients may present with symptoms of hypochondriasis or dementia, thus masking depression and making diagnosis difficult. Treatment consists of many modalities, including alleviation of precipitating factors (such as physical illness or medications), the use of tricyclic antidepressants, supportive psychotherapy and utilization of community support systems.
