The amenorrheic athlete.

S R Wall, A N Belcastro, D C Cumming.

Abstract

With the growing number of women who undertake strenuous physical exercise, an effect of such activity on reproductive function has become apparent. This may be due to many factors including low body fat and altered peripheral steroid metabolism. Impaired prolactin release may also be a factor, but all factors must be considered together. Management includes decrease of workload and return to ideal body weight, plus medication if necessary.
