Advising your elderly patients concerning safe exercising.

A Myers.

Abstract

With the emergence of physical activity programs geared specifically to senior citizens, family physicians will increasingly be called on to provide advice or approval concerning their patients' suitability for participation. In addition, family physicians have been identified as having a key role to play in the promotion of exercise for sedentary older adults. To assist the family practitioner in advising elderly patients concerning safe exercise patterns, this article discusses the documented benefits, as well as the medical considerations, associated with exercising for this target group.
