Abstract
Pre-hospitalization cardiac arrest carries a mortality rate of at least 96% unless advanced care is available. Although a paramedic system can provide a survival rate of up to 40%, the cost of maintaining such a system cannot be sustained by smaller communities. Recently, however, EMT-defibrillators-particularly the new generation of defibrillators-have been able to provide a survival rate of up to 20% of cardiac arrest patients.
