The authors reviewed the literature published in English during the past 10 years about injuries to the musculotendinous unit of the posterior aspect of the leg. They discuss the anatomy and function of the motor unit, the history and physical examination pertinent to the injury, the differential diagnosis, and the management of the injury. The controversy over surgical versus conservative treatment continues with no general consensus.
