New Treatments for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: Prostatectomy and other forms of therapy.

P K Skepasts, L M Lee.

Abstract

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is the most common of all neoplasms. The most common treatment is prostatectomy, but other available therapies include androgen antagonists, α-adrenergic blockers, anticholinergic agents, prostate dilation with a ballon, and urethral stents. Prostatectomy is likely to remain the standard of care for the foreseeable future because it is safe and much more effective than all other current and experimental forms of therapy.
