Exercise and the Elderly: How a well rounded program can lead to better health.

J Taunton, E Rhodes, M Donnelly, J Warren, S O'Brien.

Abstract

By the year 2025, more than 25% of Canadians will be older than 65; and nearly half the population older than 65 has some degree of disability. With physiologic aging comes a gradual loss of functional capacity and independence that becomes a major health burden. Researchers have shown that lifelong, moderate levels of exercise are associated with increased longevity, enhanced physical function, and longer-lasting independent living.
