Constipation in Childhood: How early recognition can prevent serious problems.

V J Ebelt, D Riddell.

Abstract

Constipation is a common childhood problem, though parents are sometimes concerned where no problem exists. Early recognition through careful history and physical examination can prevent more serious problems. This article outlines assessment, differential diagnosis, and treatment. Extensive investigations are rarely necessary. Diet, stool softness, attention to routine, and much patience will resolve most cases.
