Lung extracellular matrix: physiology and pathophysiology.

J Roman1, A H Limper, J A McDonald.

Abstract

In addition to providing structural support and defining tissue compartments, the lung's extracellular matrix plays an important role in regulating cell behavior. Normal and pathologic interactions between the matrix, or its components, and cells of the lung are examined. Such interactions assume major importance in lung injury and repair.
