A new role for a metabolic star: AMP-activated protein kinase stimulates fat absorption.

Pascal Ferré1, Fabienne Foufelle.

Abstract

AMPK is a kinase involved in cell energy homeostasis. In this issue of Cell Metabolism, Chopra and colleagues (2011) reveal a new function of AMPK in stimulating fat absorption. AMPK enhances the expression of the bile acid transporter, BSEP, by activating the coactivator SRC-2, thus promoting bile acid secretion. Copyright Â
