ECMO indications and complications.

S M Donn1.

Abstract

Widely adopted while prospective validation was still under way, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is now a clinically established treatment for reversing neonatal respiratory failure. The technique's accomplishments are impressive-83% survival in conditions otherwise associated with 80% mortality-but its problems include significant handicap in 20% of treated survivors.
