Abstract
BACKGROUND: The Spectrum projection package uses estimates of national HIV incidence, demographic data and other assumptions to describe the consequences of the HIV epidemic in low and middle-income countries. The default parameters used in Spectrum are updated every 2 years as new evidence becomes available to inform the model. This paper reviews the default parameters that define the course of HIV progression among adults and children in Spectrum.Entities:

Calculation of adult survival parameters used in Spectrum
| Survival in first year | |
| Mortality rate in first year of treatment | 0.06 |
| Proportion lost to follow-up | 0.17 |
| Mortality rate of those lost to follow-up | 0.47 |
| Survival at end of first year | 1−(0.06+(0.17*0.47))=0.86 |
| Survival in subsequent years | |
| Mortality rate in subsequent years | 0.02 |
| Proportion lost to follow-up | 0.17 |
| Mortality rate of those lost to follow-up | 0.47 |
| Survival in subsequent years | 1−(0.02+(0.17*0.47))=0.90 |
