Use of ECMO for resection of post-traumatic ruptured lung abscess with empyema.

Abstract

We report a patient who sustained multiple injuries from a motorcycle collision. He had a protracted intensive care course complicated by ventilator-associated pneumonia and empyema resulting from a ruptured lung abscess. He successfully underwent a thoracotomy, lung resection, decortication, and pleurectomy on veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
