Abstract

AIM: To determine whether there is a relationship between the mesiodistal crown diameters of permanent first molars and deciduous second molars, and to update their odontometric values for the Spanish population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed of a sample of molars in 101 children (46 boys and 55 girls) of Spanish parents. The measurements were performed on cast dental models using a fine-tipped caliper with accuracy of ± 0.05 mm.
RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were detected between sexes both for the permanent first molars and for the deciduous second molars. However, no differences were detected between antimeric teeth. The size of the deciduous second molars was related to the size of the permanent first molar, and this relationship was statistically significant.
CONCLUSION: As a correlation was found between the mesiodistal crown diameters of permanent first molars and deciduous second molars, the findings of this study may be used as a predictive factor for tooth-jaw size disharmony, and therefore for possible crowding of the permanent dentition.
