Abstract
Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) plays a central role in a wide array of cellular functions including control of cell growth and differentiation, embryonic development, wound healing, angiogenesis, and immune regulation. In the gastrointestinal tract, TGF-β can either promote or suppress inflammation and cancer formation. This report reviews recent data on the role of TGF-β in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease and how TGF-β might contribute to the cancer risk associated with chronic inflammation of the gut.Entities:
