Inpatient management of adults and children with type 1 diabetes.

David M Tridgell1, Angela H Tridgell, Irl B Hirsch.

Abstract

Type 1 diabetes poses unique inpatient challenges because of the risks of diabetic ketoacidosis, uncontrolled hyperglycemia, and hypoglycemia. Although newer insulin analogs and insulin pumps provide means for improved glycemic control, they can be daunting for nonexperts. This article focuses on inpatient and perioperative insulin management of stable, nonketotic, nonpregnant adults and children with type 1 diabetes. These principles can also be applied to patients with steroid-induced hyperglycemia. Copyright 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
