Dexmedetomidine sedation for awake tracheotomy: case report and literature review.

Marianne D David1, Lorenzo De Marchi.

Abstract

The safe administration of conscious sedation in a patient with a critical airway who underwent awake tracheotomy using dexmedetomidine, a selective alpha(2)-agonist with sympatholytic, anxiolytic, analgesic, and sedative properties, is presented. Unlike other commonly used sedative agents, dexmedetomidine provided adequate sedation with minimal respiratory depression. Copyright 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
