Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Several dietary factors, such as antioxidant vitamins, have potential roles in the development of obstructive lung diseases. However, the results of studies on the relationships between dietary factors and obstructive lung diseases are inconsistent. The aim of this study was to determine which nutrients are related to airway obstruction (AO) in the Korean population.Entities:

Clinical characteristics of study subjects according to airway obstruction
Values are presented as mean ± SD or number (%).
AO, airway obstruction; NS, not significant; BMI, body mass index; BP, blood pressure.
aWaist to hip ratio ≥ 1 in males and ≥ 0.9 in females.
Lifestyle and economic status according to airway obstruction
Values are presented as mean ± SD or number (%).
AO, airway obstruction; NS, not significant.
aData from ever-smokers.
bData were collected only from employed subjects (no airflow obstruction, n = 557; airflow obstruction, n = 43).
c1 US $ = 1,005 Korean won in 2001.
Nutritional status according to airway obstruction
Values are presented as mean ± SD.
AO, airway obstruction; RDA, recommended dietary allowance; NS, not significant.
Laboratory characteristics according to airway obstruction
Values are presented as mean ± SD.
AO, airway obstruction; NS, not significant; AST, aspartate transaminase; ALT, alanine transaminase; HDL, high-density lipoprotein.
Lung function parameters according to airway obstruction
Values are presented as mean ± SD.
AO, airway obstruction; FEV1, forced expiratory volume in one second; FVC, forced vital capacity; NS, not significant.
The association between potential risk factors and airway obstruction
AO, airway obstruction.
aThe median value of income, 1,230 US $/mon, was the criterion. 1 US $ = 1,005 Korean won in 2001.
bPercentage of a nutrient to the recommended dietary allowance for Koreans.
Independent factors associated with airway obstruction by multiple logistic regression analysis
aPercentage of a nutrient to the recommended dietary allowance for Koreans.
bThe median value of income, 1,230 US $/mon, was the criterion. 1 US $ = 1,005 Korean won in 2001.
