Abstract
BACKGROUND: The metabolic syndrome (MetS) concept is widely used in public health and clinical settings without an agreed pathophysiology. We have re-examined the MetS in terms of body fuels, so as to provide a coherent cross-cultural pathogenesis.Entities:

† At significant level α = 0.05, p-value < 0.05 was used for ANOVA for differences in means and chi-square test for proportions among four different ethnic groups; p-value < 0.05** was used for two-sample t-test were used for comparing means and proportions between urban and rural Taiwanese.
‡ LDL is calculated from measured values of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and HDL according to the Friedewald calculation for US NHANES 2001-2002: [LDL] = [total cholesterol] - [HDL] - [triglycerides/5] where all values are expressed in mg/dL. The calculation is valid for triglycerides less than or equal to 400 mg/dL.
¥ Current smokers were considered to subjects who have a life-time smoking experience of ≥ 100 cigarettes and currently smoke.
