Preceptors' perceptions of a new evaluation tool used during nursing orientation.

Karen Pleban Steffan1, Heather Janiszewski Goodin.

Abstract

Few authors describe a nurse orientee evaluation tool based on Benner's model. The purpose of this descriptive study was to describe the preceptors' perceptions of two tools to determine their utility and helpfulness when evaluating nurse orientees. A convenience sample of 38 RN preceptors (47% response rate) from three system hospitals were surveyed via a questionnaire. Over 76% of participants perceived the two tools as easy to use and helpful when evaluating their nurse orientees.
