Lithium in chronic renal failure: a case report.

Ravindra B Belgamwar1, Fami Ebrahim, Catherine Campbell.

Abstract

A 73-year-old woman with bipolar disorder was stable on lithium. After long-term use of lithium, she developed chronic renal failure. We stopped her lithium and tried alternatives but this was not successful and resulted in poor quality of life for the patient including long hospital admissions. We respected patient's wish and capacity to make decision and retried lithium. This case report gives key points in managing such cases. Copyright 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
