Developing and maintaining hope in families of the critically ill.

J F Miller.

Abstract

Because of the interdependent, reciprocal dynamics of families and patients, responses of one affect the other. Hope is an important state of being and has been noted to be an example of such a response. Developing and maintaining family members' hope has a contagious effect on the patient. A model of nursing strategies to inspire hope in families of the critically ill with possible outcomes is presented.
