Pay for performance and the physicians quality reporting initiative in neurologic practice.

James C Stevens1.

Abstract

Pay-for-performance (P4P) initiatives are receiving significant attention in the media and throughout all parts of health care. To improve quality, hundreds of private payers have initiated P4P programs over the past decade. Recently, the federal government has followed suit with its Physicians Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI). These programs have several potential shortcomings, and questions arise as to their value in truly improving health outcomes. Nevertheless, momentum continues to gather in both the public and private sectors for P4P to serve as a catalyst for health care reform. Copyright 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
