Abstract
Because many children who have swallowed foreign bodies are asymptomatic, physicians must maintain a high index of suspicion. The majority of ingested foreign bodies pass spontaneously, but serious complications, such as bowel perforation and obstruction, can occur. There is only limited evidence based data on the diagnostic and therapeutic procedure. In german speaking countries no treatment recommendations or guidelines exist. We present an interdisciplinary consented flow sheet for the diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for the gastrointestinal ingestion of radiolucent and radiodense foreign bodies, which is based on the available data as well as on common sense.Entities:
