The use of negative pressure wound therapy in the diabetic foot.

Paul Chadwick1.

Abstract

This article reviews the role of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) in the management of ulceration of the foot in people who suffer with diabetes. It examines the prevalence and costly implications of this condition and the low rate of healing using conventional therapies. The method of therapy is described and evidence for the use of NPWT is reviewed. There is a discussion regarding the choice of whether foam or gauze is the most suitable interface. There is practical advice given as when NPWT is indicated using a case study to demonstrate its use. The article concludes by suggesting how NPWT may be used in the future.
