Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of hepatitis B vaccination after hepatitis B vaccine integrated into routine immunization in the areas of Ministry of Health/Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization GAVI Cooperation Project (MOH/GAVI Coopreation Project).
METHODS: Children born between 2002 and 2005 were selected from 68 counties of GAVI project by multi-stage random sampling method. Demographic information and hepatitis B vaccination history were collected by questionnaire and review of vaccination records, and 2-4ml serum sample was taken for testing of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (Anti-HBc) and hepatitis B surface antibody (Anti-HBs) by Enzyme Linksed Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method.
RESULTS: Coverage of HepB3 and timely birth dose (HepB1) was 80.02% and 60.06% respectively, the younger, the higher. HepB coverage among children born in urban was higher than children born in rural, born in hospital was higher than born at home. The prevalence of HBsAg for children born between 2002-2005 was decreased to <2%.
CONCLUSION: HepB has been successfully integrated into routine immunization in GAVI project areas, the immunization coverage was improved dramatically.
