Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relation between partner dependence and sexual risk behavior in the context of the information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) model.
METHODS: STI clinic patients (n = 1432) completed a computerized interview assessing partner dependence, condom use, and IMB variables.
RESULTS: Men had higher partner-dependence scores than women did. Patients reporting greater dependence reported less condom use. Gender did not moderate the partner dependence-condom-use relationship. Partner dependence did not moderate the relation between IMB constructs and condom use.
CONCLUSIONS: Further research is needed to determine how partner dependence can be incorporated into conceptual models of safer sex behaviors.
