Effect of ageing on the immune response of dogs to vaccines.

H HogenEsch1, S Thompson.

Abstract

Ageing is associated with a decline in functional competence of the immune system, sometimes referred to as immunosenescence. As this increases the susceptibility of dogs to infectious diseases, it is important to determine if the efficacy of vaccines is affected by ageing. Studies to date suggest that the primary response to vaccines may be compromised in old dogs, but recall responses remain intact. Information on the effect of ageing on the duration of protective immunity following vaccination is needed. Copyright 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
