Figure 1Brief summary of the adipocytokines discussed: increased adipose tissue mass is associated with decreased adiponectin levels and increased RBP4, IL-6, and TNF-α production, which in turn stimulates LCN2 synthesis. LCN2 upregulates adiponectin and downregulates TNF-α. Decreased adiponectin and increased RBP4 levels are associated with decreased fatty acid oxidation, increased gluconeogenesis in the liver, and insulin resistance.
