Figure 1Duration of the postprandial, postabsorptive, and fasting states. The postprandial and the postabsorptive states last for 4 and 6 h, respectively. Therefore, the cumulative duration of postprandial state is ∼12 h, which is equivalent to a full half-day period of time, and the “real” fasting state is limited to a 3-h time interval at the end of the night.
