Abstract
INTRODUCTION: As patients after cardiac arrest suffer from the consequences of global ischemia reperfusion, we aimed to establish the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in these patients, and to investigate its possible association to severe hypoxic brain damage.Entities:

Classification/staging system for acute kidney injury
| Stage | Serum creatinine criteria | Urine output criteria |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Increase in serum creatinine of more than or equal to 0.3 mg/dl (≥ 26.4 μmol/l) or increase to more than or equal to 150% to 200% (1.5 to 2-fold) from baseline | Less than 0.5 ml/kg per hour for more than 6 hours |
| 2 | Increase in serum creatinine to more than 200% to 300% (> 2 to 3-fold) from baseline | Less than 0.5 ml/kg per hour for more than 12 hours |
| 3 | Increase in serum creatinine to more than 300% (> 3-fold) from baseline (or serum creatinine of more than or equal to 4.0 mg/dl (≥ 354 μmol/l) with an acute increase of at least 0.5 mg/dl (44 μmol/l)) | Less than 0.3 ml/kg per hour for 24 hours or anuria for 12 hours |
Classification/staging system for acute kidney injury as provided by Mehta and colleagues [3]. Individuals who receive renal replacement therapy are considered to have met the criteria for stage 3 irrespective of the stage they are in at the time of renal replacement therapy.
