Depression and epilepsy: a review of multiple facets of their close relation.

Andres M Kanner1.

Abstract

Depressive disorders are the most frequent comorbidity of PWE. As discussed in this article, the depressive disorder is another expression of a neurologic disorder with psychiatric symptoms. The high comorbidity of both conditions can be explained by the existence of common pathogenic mechanisms whereby one condition facilitates the occurrence of the other. The negative impact of depressive disorders in the life of PWE is significant; hence, a prompt recognition should be followed by a treatment designed to yield complete symptom remission.
