[Trichinellosis in Poland in 2007].

Małgorzata Sadkowska-Todys1, Elzbieta Gołab.

Abstract

In the year 2007 in Poland a total of 292 cases of human trichinellosis were registered, one of which was an individual case. The remaining cases occurred in eight outbreaks; one of them was among the largest of all the outbreaks in the past two decades. It occurred in the Zachodniopomorskie voivodeship (West Pomerania), and was caused by consumption of raw pork sausage distributed in many stores. Several cases linked to this outbreak of trichinellosis have occurred in Ireland, Germany and Denmark. The source of the infection in most of the outbreaks was wild boar meat. Only in two outbreaks the infected products were prepared from pork and in one from pork and wild boar meat. The presence of Trichinella endemic areas in Poland determines the necessity of careful meat inspection for Trichinella spp. infection.
