Abstract
Staphyloma in the anterior segment of the eye is a rare abnormality of development. Histopathologic and electron microscopic studies suggest that the alteration occurs during embryogenesis. This report describes a 1-year-old girl with protrusion of the cornea between the eyelids in the left eye. Surgical removal of the staphyloma was performed, with reconstruction of the eyeball and total corneoscleral transplant. The clinical and histopathologic findings were typical of congenital anterior staphyloma. Although most affected patients are treated with enucleation, corneoscleral transplant provides a good cosmetic option in these cases. Copyright 2009, SLACK Incorporated.Entities:
