Effect of chronic manganese intoxication on the sleep-wake cycle in the rat.

Chronic manganese intoxication elicits in the rat an increase in slow wave sleep and a decrease in paradoxical sleep by modification of the length of the phases. The similarities between this observation and the sleep disturbances observed in man in Parkinson's disease and chronic manganese poisoning are discussed.
