Adaptation to chronic illness in childhood: diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss a conceptual frame of reference for the study of human responses to chronic illness in childhood using diabetes mellitus as a model case and to review the research findings on physiological and psychological adaptation. In addition, the implications of these studies for nursing practice are presented.
